This was a purchase for my wife, who is the photographer in the house. We started out with a D3200 and replaced it two years later with a D5500. At the time, that was a major upgrade and, once she got comfortable with the camera and the new features, the quality of her pictures definitely improved. The D5500 is a great camera, and is now used as her 2nd, but the D500 is simply awesome. There is a significant difference in specifications between the two (check out the specs on the Nikon web site) and price too of course! However, if you are a serious (amature) photographer then give this camera a serious look. She hasn't shot any 4K video yet (she's into nature shots) so I can't speak to that, but we are impressed with the RAW images and how little editing that is required before she uploads them. The other thing that impresses me is the action/repeat mode. At 10 FPS, this camera will definitely capture actions shots - but only if you use a high performance memory card.I would definitely recommend this camera, but not to a beginner. It's something you should grow into because it would be over-kill for a casual user. If you do buy the camera, spend a few extra dollars on the recommended high performance XQD memory card - it's worth it!
