I normally am not a big fan of historical fiction; it's usually just a little too dry and academic for my taste. But Ken Westbrook's take on the life and experiences of Joseph of Arimathea is a rich, full, engrossing tale that brings many names from the Bible to full flesh and blood reality for the reader, including Joseph himself, Nicodemus, and even Pontius Pilate and Caiphas! We get to follow and learn how Joseph went from a quiet, successful businessman, loving husband and father, and the kind of person who treated life with caution and did not 'make waves', until the arrival of Jesus of Nazareth. Could Jesus be the long promised Messiah? Joseph investigates discreetly, willing to sacrifice all if Jesus is the promised One, but has to navigate a complicated web between Jewish leader Caiphas and the real power of the region, Pilate. This is a story of faith, but mostly, it's a very human story about a man and how, through his belief and ultimate courage, became a name attached to the story of Jesus for all eternity. The book reads like any great novel, with as much attention to person as to historical detail. It is never dull and actually hard to put down once you start. Not only will you never think of Joseph of Aramithea in the same way again, it's also a great way to think about your own relationship with Jesus...once you've determined who He is, what will you be willing to do?
